The Honors Intro to Engineering class participated in a virtual Canstruction through the University of Memphis. They provided a CAD design of their structure, a cost spreadsheet, and write up about their designs. The top 2 designs of the competition will be built at Memphis. However, Mrs. Morgan wanted her class to experience Canstruction as part of her FLEX. This process helps students “discover and conquer the unimaginable” as part of Mrs. Morgan’s Deep Hope. The Engineering class raised money through snack sales, then went shopping for their own cans. The group will be donating approximately 900 cans to the Mid-South Food Bank. After a few challenges, the groups finished their structures on Friday, April 30.

Lorraine Can-tel: 319 cans

The Lorraine “Cantel” is a representation of resilience in Memphis. The Lorraine “Cantel” started off as a normal “Cantel,” but it later became the infamous place Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It is now a well known museum around the world that raises awareness of injustices that occur in America. It now educates future generations on the change that Martin Luther King Jr. initiated. The Lorraine “Cantel” is a constant reminder of our Resilient Memphis. We chose to create the Lorraine “Cantel” to continue the legacy it has established. We will use the cans to showcase the “Cantel” and to not only continue the legacy but help with hunger around Memphis.

Grizzlies Can Win It All: 468 Cans

We were dominant in Vancouver, Canada. We could not be topped. But in 2001 we decided it was time for a new challenge. We took the journey from Vancouver, and were resilient enough to make it to Memphis. However, we encountered many obstacles that have kept us from glory. Finally, a hero arises. Ja Morant has come to make the resilient Grizzlies dominant once again. In his honor, we created a Memphis Grizzly symbol. We chose Bush’s Baked Bean cans to get the dark blue color, Good and Gather Cut Beans to get the light blue, Progresso New England Clam Chowder to get an even lighter blue, Hanover Garbanzo Beans to get the white, and Good and Gather Southern Style corn to capture the vibrant yellow of the grizzly’s eyes.

Both of the Canstruction designs are finalists for the Canstruction event! They were the only 2 chosen from the “Design Only” bracket. The “STEM ambassadors” at Memphis will build our Engineering students’s structures on May 14 through a live stream event!
