4th grade field trip to Elmwood Cemetery

As part of the fourth grade’s study of Memphis and Tennessee history our classes recently enjoyed a field trip to Elmwood Cemetery.  The classes participated in a docent-led tour describing the Civil War section of the cemetery, the mausoleums, the yellow fever epidemic, and famous Memphians buried there.  After the hour and a half tour, the students enjoyed a picnic lunch.

The students are pictured at the cottage that houses the offices and records for Elmwood Cemetery. The bell in the tower behind the cottage rings for every funeral.

The students are learning about Chinese traditions of leaving notes and various items on the tombstones.

They are listening to the docent tell the story of the Sultana disaster.
