Bible Ceremony 2020

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
Psalm 119:105

We celebrated one of our favorite yearly events on Friday, September 18 — the Bible Ceremony. Every new student in grades 6 through 12 received a leather-bound Bible engraved with the Harding logo and the student’s name.

Mr. Seth King, our campus minister welcomed everyone and introduced Ms. Sloan Scott (‘11) as the speaker for the ceremony. Mrs. Anne Nowlin, our Enrollment and Advancement Director read the names of the students as they came to the stage and Mr. Trent Williamson, our Head of School greeted the students after they crossed the stage and picked up their new Bible.

“This Harding Academy tradition began 21 years ago, and for many years was guided by Dr. Charlie Fowler who worked hard to start this ceremony. Mr. Jason Knight now organizes this powerful Harding Academy tradition, and we are grateful for his leadership and for the contribution of so many others, especially the Gaylon Smith family.

Students, teachers, administration, family, and friends, this is what we are about. This is what makes us distinct. Harding Academy is a good school with excellent academic programs and opportunities, incredible artistic and musical programs, and strong athletic teams that compete at the highest level. But those things are true of many schools, but very few schools hold the faith commitment that we do. We are committed to this written word, but we are also committed to Jesus, THE Living WORD of God, to the Kingdom of God, and to the teachings of Jesus.

Today you cross the stage from left to right, and you come empty-handed. At graduation, you will walk from right to left, and our prayer is that you still have this word in your hand, and even more so in your heart.

On the bottom of your Bible and inside of your Bible, your name will be written; a reminder that God calls YOU by name. He calls YOU beloved. He calls you son or daughter. He calls you his.

Today, these students receive a Bible, the written story of God. But hopefully they won’t be the only people that receive something today. Maybe each of us will receive a small reminder of what this story stands for, what Harding Academy stands for, and of the ways that God loves us.” Seth King
