Alumnus Calvin Austin Hosts STEAM camp

Shout-out to alumnus Calvin Austin III (’17) who hosted an all-day STEAM camp on our campus this weekend. Austin is currently the wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he wanted his camp to be focused on pursuits other than sports.

“Sports are cool, but learning and being smart, being different and top in your class, that’s cool too,” said Austin, who had opportunities to attend schools in the Ivy League. “I don’t want to make the focus, ‘don’t do sports,’ or anything like that. It’s just about truly maximizing your potential.

“I want to at least expose them to that because when they get older, there may be a chance where they’re applying for a college or thinking about a major and they’re like, ‘You know what? When I flew this drone, it got me interested in doing more technology. Or when I went into the music workshop and learned how to mix music and mix my own beat, I got interested in music.’ Just cultivating and trying to just get them thinking about things that aren’t always in the news, in the media (and) in the forefront.”
