Art teacher Eddy Efaw’s work “Order and Chaos” was accepted into The Breath and Clay 2021 Art Exhibition. This piece explores the juxtaposition of order and chaos by positioning clean, geometric illusion-oriented designs alongside highly organic, textured slip. This contrast of surface decoration leads viewers to consider that below the surface of broken people, places, and events lies beauty and order if one is willing to push back the darkness to consider the beauty inside. Makoto Fujimura notes in his book A Theology of Making: Art + Faith that “When making honors brokenness, the broken shapes can come into focus as necessary components of the New World to come.” Efaw concurs with this concept and has the deep hope that by incorporating his designs onto decorative utilitarian stoneware, individuals will engage this truth, wrestle with it, and incarnate it in their daily lives.
