Honors African American History class trip

4541.jpg

Mr. Williamson and Dr. Frizzell’s Honors African American History class took a two-day field trip to important sites of the civil rights movement in Alabama. The trip capped the class’s unit on the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s. Students were able to walk in the footprints of history across the Edmund-Pettus Bridge in Selma and down the steps of 16th Street Church in Birmingham. They saw Dr. King’s home church in Montgomery, saw the site where Rosa Parks was arrested, and visited the old Montgomery Greyhound Station, where brave young people integrating buses were met with unrelenting violence. It was an excellent opportunity not only to see many of the places they had been studying, but also to assess how far we’ve come, and how far we have left to go – the perfect Black History Month exercise.
