Harding English Department
wins awards
This month the National Council of Teachers of English is honoring the top high school senior writers from across the country. These writers were chosen from almost 2000 students from all 50 states who were nominated in their junior year by their teachers. Nominated students were required to submit samples of their best writing and were also required to write an impromptu essay under supervision. A team of English teachers from each state judged the writing. Harding Academy is one of only six Tennessee schools to have a winning writer, Katie Walker. In addition, the Harding Academy English Department has also received a commendation from the National Council of Teachers of English for excellence in its instructional program as evidenced by the high quality of writing of its students.
Up The Down Staircase
Harding Academy Theatre wrapped up their presentation of Up the Down Staircase Saturday night. The play follows Miss Barrett, a new and idealistic teacher, through her first year at an inner city school in New York in the 1960s. Her experiences will tickle your funny bone and tug at your heartstrings. Anyone who has been a teacher or a student will identify with this classic story of the American classroom.

Seventh Graders Receive
their bibles during
special assembly
"They are not just words written on paper...they are life altering". This was the message our seventh graders received Wednesday, September 10, from Mr. Jonathan Murphy during the Seventh Grade Bible Ceremony. After being surrounded by the Senior Class singing "Thy Word is A Lamp Unto My Feet," the seventh graders walked across the Auditorium stage to receive their own personalized Harding Bibles made available through the generosity of The Dr. Gaylon and Mrs. Deanna Smith Endowment. It is our great hope that the words of these Bibles will sink deep into their hearts as God guides them in the path of righteousness.for printable pictures click here

Introduces Debit Card
Lunchroom Program
Harding Cordova is updating the cafeteria for the 2008-09 school year. Students participating in the Sodexo lunch program are now using a debit card system. They love having their own cards and are excited to be on the same operation program used by the high school. Cathy Gatewood, the lunchroom manager, feels the new method of handling lunch money will help control lost lunch coupons and allow the lunch lines to move more quickly. This is an exciting change for our Cordova students.
Class of 2009 Kicks off the
new school year with
the Sr. Picnic
On August 5, the class of 2009 celebrated the beginning of their senior year with a picnic. They enjoyed a delicious dinner of BBQ and all the trimmings. The seniors participated in a Harding tradition and painted their handprints on the wall leading to the senior hallway. After this, the class received their banner, designed and presented by their parents. It will hang across the hall from the handprints, and includes the class Bible verse and each senior's name. This was an exciting event for all the seniors, and was a perfect way to kick off the new year.
